1. Managing Generation whY?!?

Here they come. They are inquisitive, computer savvy, confident, change-oriented, and results-driven. They have been nurtured and pampered. They have been convinced that they are number one and that they are indeed special. They are self-confident and at times narcissistic. They are both high performance and high maintenance. They have been rewarded for participation rather than simply performance. They expect accolades for completing expected tasks. They have been educated in a low authority and informal environment and are now entering a more formal and authoritarian work environment. They are eager to learn, like to work with goals, hold high expectations of bosses and take the life/work balance seriously. They expect to make a difference on day one, advance quickly, and they see the company as privileged to hire them. They have little to no loyalty to an organization.

Who are they? They are called Millennials or Gen Yer’s – those born after 1978. The first wave of the 70 million strong twenty-something’s have now hit the workplace and things are a changing, and they are not going away. In the last four years Gen Yer’s increased their representation in the workforce from 14% to 21% and it is only going to accelerate.

Organizations that fail to adapt now will find themselves scrambling to catch up with the next powerful generation of employees. Ready or not, here they come!

Five Millennial facts you can count on … and other Millennial-myths

I. Five Millennial facts you can count on … and other Millennial-myths
1. Generational distinctions – Every generation comes with its own idiosyncrasies and we are making way too much of the differences that Millennials bring. Sure, there are differences but we can easily adapt to these differences.
2. Generational similarities – People are people regardless of age. If you know how to work with Boomers and Gen Xer’s, then you can work with Millennials.
3. Generational adaptation – Every generation has had to learn how to adapt to the workplace environment and the Millennials will be no different. If we would just relax, time will make it all better.
4. Generational pigeonhole – This whole “Gen Y thing” is simply the product of some bored academician. It is a fluffy label without substance that contributes nothing more than a pigeonhole for the other generations to condescendingly toss around.
5. Generational influence – Give me a little time and I will teach these Millennials how to work. We will see who is influencing whom? When I was a kid …
II. Eight Millennial preferences you will someday wish you knew… sort of!
III. Seven Millennial leadership-tactics that experienced managers ignore… and consequently fail with!

2. Rowing The Boat Faster With Your Anchor Out

You push hard to aggressively implement improvements but it is like rowing the boat faster with the anchor out. There are just some people that are reluctant to change and they make progress so difficult.

.In fact, most major changes fail because of the inability to get reluctant people to buy-in to the change initiative. This becomes a daunting challenge when compounded with the fact that the unrelenting demands of the market place force organizations to be nimble. Organizational dexterity will be the central dynamic for the successful organizations of the twenty-first century and you need people who can quickly adapt to make this happen.
You are not going to succeed by simply trying harder, training more, or throwing more resources at the change. If that is your existing strategy then you are simply rowing the boat faster with the anchor out. So how do we successfully lead reluctant people through change? How do we get these anchors on board?

Through Mike, you will discover why people are specifically reluctant to change… and it might surprise you as to why. You will be able to identify some of the instigators of change-reluctance and learn what you can do to successfully overcome them. You will also discover the six high-impact tactics that will equip you to confidently lead your team to embrace change.

  1. Permanently delete the word “change” from your vocabulary.
  2. Give your team venting space.
  3. Be sincere…and tell the truth.
  4. Form a Navigating Team.
  5. Design and communicate STSs. (Short-Term-Successes)
  6. Implement a 3 Squared Communication Plan

You will leave refreshed, confident, and more competent to effectively lead your reluctant people through change. It is time to deftly pull the anchors in!

3. Am I the only Entirely Normal Person Here?

Did you ever go home after a particularly challenging day at work and think something like “I would be such a good team-member if I could just work with someone else” or “I would be such a good leader if I just had different people working for me”?

You tell yourself that they just don’t seem to make people like they used to. In fact after some particularly bad days you may actually long for the days of public flogging! If so, then Am I The Only Entirely Normal Person Working Here?is for you.
Mike Hovda, an expert in dealing with a variety of people, will help you understand yourself and others, as well as help you navigate through the workable solutions. You will understand how we are all inclined to approach problems, people, pace, and policies in a unique way… and yet with similarities.
Mike then takes you to next level on how to effectively deal with the varying kinds of people by exploring how people learn, how you can develop an effective coaching perspective, and how you can identify the root causes of under-performance. All this is done with a light and humorous tone.
All of this culminates in a strong conclusion that will leave you revitalized, confident, and ready to work with just about anyone.

4. The Top Five Communication Blunders

Communication technology has enriched our culture. Today's employee may have a desk phone, a cell phone, a Blackberry, an email, a voice mail, an internet access, an intranet access, an iPhone, and maybe even an intercom. As a result, communication flow and impact have dramatically improved as result. Or have they?

In some respects we have become more focused on the methodology of communication at the expense of communication-outcome, and it is not going to get better. Generation Y or the Millennials are known to be tech-savvy but communication-limited. This generation can rapidly text a friend in the Millennialeze language but may have difficulty emailing a customer or a boss in a clear and professional manner.

Communication is the lubricant for every highly effective work environment. Mike humorously and yet practically explores the five basic communication blunders and then reveals how to create a candid and communication-rich environment. You will walk away with a revitalized motivation to speak so people will want to listen and listen so people will want to speak.

  1. Factually Squishy
  2. Verbally Narcissistic
  3. Vocally Overconfident
  4. Empathetically Deficient
  5. Contextually Disconnected
